Furtschellas –
stress-free skiing

Birgit Payer

Skiing in the Engadin: this means discovering the Furtschellas ski paradise in Sils. Again and again. For the Payer family from Zurich, nothing beats the wide range of slopes close to Sils. It's fun for the whole family.

One year of anticipation

«Sils is like a signal to switch off. Here, I can really unwind.» Neurosurgeon Michael Payer cannot imagine a single winter without Sils and Furtschellas. «As we glide up the mountain on the cable car and enjoy the view of Lake Sils, I feel totally liberated. I need this to keep my life in balance.»

«Our youngsters can turn up a gear while we parents wind down.»

Ski paradise for pure fun

The tranquillity is just one of the many reasons the Payer family come to Sils. Other reasons are Cedric, Timo and Gil. Their three sons can have a blast on the sweeping slopes of Furtschellas. From blue to black runs, there's everything that downhill demons Cedric and Timo could possibly want. The same goes for snowboarder Gil. Birgit, their mother, has loved Furtschellas ever since she was a child: «I learned to ski here. My parents always wanted to go to the Corvatsch, whereas we chose Furtschellas. This was our realm, well away from the oldies.»

Closer to nature

What the Payer family appreciates most about Furtschellas is the lack of fuss: there are two chair lifts and three ski lifts, together with a varied range of perfectly-groomed slopes leading through pristine nature. «We have also tried other winter sports regions – but Sils in the Engadin is simply unique», enthuses Birgit Payer. «Sils is a village and it retains its atmosphere and tranquillity, even when there are many visitors. This is how I experienced it as a child and this is how I still experience it today.»

The Payer family's tips
