Lecture by Paul Hoff: Creativity and Illness

Event within the framework of the main theme A. Schwarzenbach and F. Nietzsche
Psychiatric diagnoses condense information and structure professional communication. However, far more than in other areas of medicine, they are interwoven with the socio-cultural context and the prevailing conception of humanity. A connection between giftedness and mental illness has been a subject of controversial debate since antiquity. Psychiatry must neither uncritically pathologize exceptional creativity nor downplay an actual illness. The "Sils examples" of Annemarie Schwarzenbach and Friedrich Nietzsche serve as illustrations.
