Piano to zero hands

Commented Welte-Mignon demonstration with hotelier Urs Kienberger and long-time in-house technician Guido Schmidt.

In the 118-year-old Waldhaus, a Welte Mignon, a sophisticated self-playing piano from the then world-famous firm Welte & Sons of Freiburg im Breisgau, has stood since 1910. Thanks to Guido Schmidt, the hotel's former maintenance technician, it can now be heard in perfect condition once again: For years, he painstakingly repaired the instrument, which had been languishing in the cellar. Miraculously, almost 100 original rolls, played by great pianists of the time, have also survived. The rare instrument is back in the exact spot where it was placed 115 years ago, and the narrated demonstration is, in a sense, a glimpse into our great-grandparents' sound archive. Performances (each at 4:45 pm): Mon, June 22 / Fri, July 17 / Thu, August 6 / Thu, September 10 / Sun, October 4
