Grevasalvas

Grevasalvas is located above Plaun da Lej at 1940 m above sea level and belongs to the political municipality of Sils. It is one of three Maiensäss settlements in Sils and probably the most famous. Grevasalvas is located on the Via Engiadina and also on hiking trails that lead to Piz Grevasalvas and the Lunghin Pass, for example, all very popular hiking destinations. The picturesque village is also known as the "Heidi Village" because part of the filming for the 1978 Heidi series took place there. Grevasalvas already existed in the Middle Ages and was still permanently inhabited at that time. Bregaglia farmers - mainly from Soglio - spent the summer there with their cattle on the alpine farms. The farms have been private since the middle of the 19th century, but were still used by Bregaglia farming families as alps, Maiensäss and for pre-wintering during the alpine summer. Towards the end of the 20th century, many gave up farming on Grevasalvas and have since used the buildings as a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
