On July 18, 1879, Switzerland's first electric light was lit in the dining room of the Kulm Hotel.
Hotel pioneer Johannes Badrutt had the country's first power plant built for this purpose. The street lamp opposite the Kulm Hotel still commemorates this achievement today.
