The upside
of the bad weather

Herr Lehmann

Anyone who has been coming on holiday to Sils for more than 30 years knows that the sun doesn't always shine. Peter and Rosmarie Lehmann even look forward to this because they love to take a walk through the cultural history of Sils with dry feet. Sometimes, for a change, they like to treat themselves to a salt bath.

Culture every step of the way

«In Sils, we've never had time to be bored. Bad weather days can be so exciting in Sils because there is so much culture to discover.» For Rosmarie Lehmann, culture is just as much a part of a holiday in Sils as the walks along Lake Sils or into the Fex Valley. «It's fascinating that so many important and impressive thoughts and ideas were born on these footpaths and hiking trails.»

«Nature and culture complement each other quite naturally in Sils.»

Great experiences among a select few

«I can safely say that Sils inspires us to read, think and enjoy ourselves.» Peter Lehmann particularly appreciates the fact that culture in Sils is not one of many tourist attractions, but retains a living role thanks to the commitment, ingenuity and warmth of its people. «The memories that stay with us are of wonderful Thomas Mann readings, interesting Hesse Days and superb classical concerts among a select group of people. It is at events such as these that a knowledgeable audience comes together with its heart and soul.»

The upside of the bad weather

In a place where so many writers and artists have worked, there must also be books. These are assembled in the unique Biblioteca Engiadinaisa library. This is the perfect place to be when it's raining or snowing outside. Around 20,000 media can be found at Via da Baselgia 46; and anyone can borrow items free of charge. «A library visit is a fixture on our holiday programme», confesses Peter Lehmann. «It has a reading room that looks directly out onto Lake Sils – it's wonderful.»

Take an occasional dip

«There are many ways to relax and enjoy yourself in Sils.» For Peter and Rosmarie Lehmann, wellness is one of these. «Why not take an occasional dip?» Many hotels welcome you to use their facilities. The Schweizerhof Hotel has a salt bath with an outdoor area. The 20-metre indoor pool at the Waldhaus Hotel is open to the public «where you can enjoy spectacular scenic views while you swim.»

Form a picture of the Engadin

You can also find Peter and Rosmarie Lehmann in the museums when the sun isn't shining. «Far from being a mausoleum, the Nietzsche-House stages temporary exhibitions and hosts discussions. It is a really special place. For anyone who wants to form a picture of the Engadin, we recommend visiting the Sils Museum in Sils and the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz», adds Rosmarie Lehmann. «Culture in Sils is so varied. We always take lots of inspiration back home with us.»

Peter and Rosmarie`s tips

  • Literature about Sils in the Biblioteca Engiadinaisa
«Everything there is to read about Sils can be found in the Biblioteca Engiadinaisa library. It even has really up-to-date publications.»
  • Walks
«With the right clothing, no weather is too bad to explore Sils and the surrounding area. Head to Lake Sils, the Chastè peninsula or Lake Silvaplana.»
