Enchanting Chastè

Oystein Bruserud

Nothing is far away in Sils: nature, the mountains, the lake. May and Oystein Bruserud come a long way to enjoy this. In Norway, their home, there are countless peninsulas, but none is as magical as Chastè.

Indescribable atmosphere

«Chastè before breakfast and Chastè after dinner. We are spellbound by this enchanting peninsula. We visit it every day when we are in Sils.» May and Oystein rediscover Chastè every year. This is now the eleventh summer that they have been enjoying it on the shores of Lake Sils. «The mood, the atmosphere. It's always more beautiful than the last time.»

Amid and above it all

Chastè, the wooded peninsula, like a 300-metre finger jutting out into the blue of Lake Sils, is a magical place: the jewel of Lake Sils. Poets and philosophers wanted to stay here forever. May and Oystein have to be content with two weeks. «Through the trees, you see the lake glittering. When you stand at the most westerly point, which was also Nietzsche's favourite spot, you witness the unique magical light. You are amid it all – and yet above it all. You find peace here.» For the busy doctor Bruserud, this is the best form of medicine.

May Bruserud

«Where we come from in Norway, there are countless peninsulas. But none is like Chastè.»

Long journey to happiness

For May and Oystein, their journey to “their” peninsula begins in the small village of Eidsvag, which has just 900 inhabitants and is a seven-hour drive from Oslo. Their journey ends every year in room 44 of the Hotel in the village of Sils, which has a population of 750. «This was our first room here and has become our holiday home ever since.»

Scaling the heights every day

Chastè's magic is just one of the reasons why the Norwegian couple make the long trip to Sils. «The mountains are our destination. In particular, our favourite mountain, the almost 3,000 metre high Piz Grevasalvas.» The Bruseruds go hiking every day. «We believe in walking everywhere. At least up to an altitude of 2,500 metres, though mostly up to 2,700 metres. Sils gives us a feeling of exhilaration, or "a high" in the truest sense of the word.»
